Microneedling with PRP: Benefits, Results, and Side Effects

Microneedling is one of the most popular minimally invasive skin rejuvenation treatments. At The Beauty Barn, we are combining it with PRP (platelet-rich plasma) for even better results. Continue reading to learn more about combining PRP with microneedling to supercharge your results.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a cosmetic skin treatment that is performed to stimulate collagen production in the skin. It involves moving 15-20 very thin sterile needles over the skin to create microscopic injuries. The trauma jumpstarts the skin’s healing response and leads to improvement in many concerns such as wrinkles, fine lines, acne scars, uneven tone, rough texture, and enlarged pores.

What is PRP?

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy is a procedure in which a small sample of blood is drawn from a patient, and the plasma is separated from the blood. Plasma contains platelets, growth factors, and proteins in high concentrations. When platelet-rich plasma is utilized back at the target area, it stimulates the growth of new, healthy cells and promotes healing.

Is microneedling with PRP better?

Microneedling with PRP is a variation of the popular microneedling skin rejuvenation treatment. It can help achieve better results than microneedling alone. This is because when the provider gently glides the pen (microneedling device) over the skin, it creates microscopic holes in the skin. Following this, when a PRP solution is applied to the skin, it penetrates better, speeding up the healing process, stimulating skin renewal, and causing the skin to progressively improve in appearance over the next few weeks.

What is microneedling with PRP good for?

Microneedling with PRP can be used to treat a range of skin imperfections, including fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, surgical scars, hyperpigmentation, age spots, sun damage, enlarged pores, uneven skin tone, and rough texture.

Am I a candidate for microneedling with PRP?

People with all skin types and skin tones can undergo microneedling and PRP. However, you may not be a candidate for this treatment if you are using certain acne medications (isotretinoin, Accutane) or have active acne. Also, people with skin conditions such as eczema, rosacea, and psoriasis may be advised against this cosmetic procedure. Pregnancy, active facial skin infections, bleeding disorders, HIV, and chronic illnesses are some of the other conditions that can be contraindications to microneedling with PRP.

How to prepare for microneedling with PRP?

There is no special preparation required before microneedling with PRP. However, it is a good idea to avoid excessive sun exposure and stay well hydrated in the lead-up to your appointment.

What to expect during the appointment?

Your provider will start the microneedling with PRP procedure by cleansing your skin and applying a topical anesthetic (numbing cream). Once the numbing medicine has taken effect in about 30 minutes, the procedure will be performed in two steps.

First, a small sample of your blood will be withdrawn and processed in a centrifuge machine to create the PRP solution. Second, the microneedling device will be applied to the treatment areas. Following this, The PRP solution will then be massaged into the treatment area.

What is recovery like after microneedling with PRP?

Recovery after microneedling with PRP is pretty quick. There may be some minor soreness and redness immediately after the treatment. Your skin will feel taut. These symptoms usually clear in a few days.

An over-the-counter pain reliever like acetaminophen can help relieve any discomfort. Most patients go back to work the next day. You can wear makeup, but it is a good idea to avoid applying too many products, especially harsh skincare products like exfoliants, to your skin while it heals. You may also want to avoid heavy workouts for a day or two, as sweating can cause additional skin irritation.

How long does it take to see results from microneedling with PRP?

Results are usually visible after 4-8 weeks, which is the time it takes for the body to make new collagen. You may need a series of microneedling and PRP treatments to see results. Maintenance treatments may be necessary every 6-12 months once you have reached your goal.

What are the side effects and risks of microneedling with PRP?

Besides the expected side effects of minor soreness and redness, other side effects can include swelling, oozing, acne flare-ups, and the formation of milia (tiny white papules).

Because microneedling involves making tiny holes in the skin, there is a risk of bleeding and infection. However, this risk is low when the procedure is performed by a licensed provider who has experience in these types of cosmetic treatments.

Some people may have a breakout of cold sores (herpes simplex virus) after microneedling with PRP. If you have a history of cold sores, your doctor may give you a prescription for antiviral medication on a preventive basis.

Notably, PRP is made from your own blood, so the risk of contamination and infection is very low.

Finding a provider for microneedling with PRP

Even though microneedling with PRP is an office-based minimally-invasive cosmetic treatment with a low risk of side effects, it does involve pricking the facial skin. It is important to find an experienced medical provider who can guide you through the treatment and perform it safely.
